Using Your Car to Power Your House

Another node in the smart grid. But it won't come cheap.

What if you could use your car’s battery to power your home? That’s the idea behind Nissan’s “Leaf to Home” technology. Nissan, in partnership with Nichicon Corporation, has built something called the “EV Power Station.” It takes power from the “Leaf to Home” device and funnels it into your home. It can also halve the amount of time you spend on an average Leaf battery charge, from eight hours to four.

But wait, what? Why would you want your car to charge your house? Isn’t it supposed to be the other way around--that you park your car and plug it in, so you can charge your battery and drive to work the next day?
The idea is clever, actually: it makes the car’s battery a node in your own personal mini-smart grid, sort of. And it could save you money. It’s all about giving customers “more power options,” the two companies said in a release (via Phys.org). Electricity prices vary by demand. Wouldn’t you like to store up energy during the low-cost periods, only to deploy it during the high-cost periods? If only you had... some sort of... giant battery you could use...
Enter “Leaf to Home” and the “EV Power Station” (and your Leaf, of course).

Or not your Leaf--yet. First, the thing is going on sale in Japan, priced at 480,000 yet (about $6,000). A government subsidy reduces the actual price by about a third, though, to roughly $4,100.
Does that sound like a good deal to you? I don’t know how high your electricity bill runs, but I know I couldn’t save anything on the order of four grand through a bit of clever energy arbitrage, not even over the course of several years. But I'm in a New York City apartment/closet. Perhaps there are households that could--but if you come from a household that blows through so much electricity as to make this economical, it's somewhat puzzling why you bought a Leaf at all.
Survivalists, doomsday-predictors, and general sky-is-falling-ists might also take heart to know they could treat their car as an auxiliary generator in the event of an asteroid strike, zombie apocalypse, and the like. Though if the grid goes down all together, that’s only going to help you for so long.
So, would you buy the thing? More details on the device from the DigInfo video below.

Fuel from air

Concept of creating sustainable fuel from air

Air Fuel Synthesis is totally viable, with the necessary investment they are currently seeking from champions of the long term vision of a technology that can replace oil and support a sustainable world.

The Air Fuel Synthesis Process

AFS Process
The AFS system uses renewable energy to capture carbon dioxide and water from the air, electrolyses the water to make hydrogen and reacts the carbon dioxide and hydrogen together to make hydrocarbon fuels.
The AFS process, which will supply a sustainable fuel alternative to fossil fuels, is driven by renewable energy and the overall process of carbon dioxide capture, fuel production and fuel combustion will be carbon neutral.
What is more, all the components of the AFS system exist either as demonstrations or are available off the shelf.
But the best news, as far as renewable energy enthusiasts are concerned is that the manufacture of AFS fuels is unrestricted by price of raw materials, geo or local politics and is unaffected by issues of land use or food availability.
AFS needs to develop relations with technology partners and financiers to establish large scale supply capabilities to support uptake of the AFS approach.

Windows 8 features deep integration with Facebook Twitter, Google, and LinkedIn

Microsoft has already released the last preview of its new operating system, the Windows 8 Release Preview. And the company is constantly releasing new updates to the preview edition so that testers will be able to test almost all the features of the new operating system by the time it hits the public this fall. Now, the operating system giant has released a new app called People, which, well, is a people management system. People in the sense info about people which translates to contacts.

On Windows 7 or older versions of the operating system, you need an extra software installed on your computer if you want to have your contacts on your computer, for example, Office Outlook. But on Windows 8, with this new People app, everything is built it. The app uses your Facebook, Google, Twitter, LinkedIn and Exchange accounts to sync contacts to your computer. So once you log in on your computer using all of these accounts in the app, you will have all your contacts here, which you can then manage and manipulate as you wish. Gizmodo writes:

The cloud-based app is designed to keep contacts in order, sure, by syncing details from a glut of online address books. But it also lets users view and interact directly with their Facebook and Twitter accounts, retweeting posts or liking statuses, from within the app itself. The app is also designed to sync data from Exchange, Google and LinkedIn, and has a built-in conflict management system—a little like Windows Phone—which attempts to collate contact data.

If this sounds a lot like your smart phone, well, it is. Not just this, the People app will let other apps installed on your computer to access contacts from the People app. This means that you do not need to have different sets of contacts for different apps. One centralized collection of contacts will serve the whole system.

This is good thinking, and if this works out without errors, this could be really fun to use. Try it out today.
